Savasana is the pose most people are willing to lose. Class runs long, someone rolls up their mat early, and the part of practice with the clearest physiological signature gets treated as the optional bit at the end. What happens in those ten minutes is more specific than relaxing, and it is worth understanding before you decide whether anything else belongs underneath you.
What a Long Hold Does to Your Nervous System

Lying supine with the muscles unloaded shifts the balance between the two halves of the autonomic nervous system. Sympathetic output falls, vagal activity rises, and the breath slows without anyone cueing it.

The rate turns out to matter more than most instructions suggest. At roughly six breaths a minute, the breath lines up with the baroreflex, the loop that adjusts heart rate against blood pressure beat by beat, and heart rate variability reaches its widest swing. You can feel the same effect as respiratory sinus arrhythmia: the heart quickens slightly on the inhale and slows on the exhale. In a long hold that gap opens up. It is measurable, and it is why a still pose is not the same as doing nothing.

Why the Holds Are Minutes, Not Breaths

Restorative poses run five to twenty minutes because connective tissue does not answer on a shorter timescale. Fascia and the tissue surrounding joints are viscoelastic, meaning they deform slowly under a light sustained load and barely at all under a brief hard one. Thirty seconds of effort pulls on muscle. Ten minutes of being held reaches everything else.

That is what the props are for. A bolster under the knees or a folded blanket along the spine takes the work away from the muscles so the load lands on tissue that only responds to time. If you are holding yourself in the shape, you are doing a different pose.

The nervous system runs on a similar clock. The shift toward parasympathetic dominance is not a switch that flips. It arrives across minutes, which is exactly the stretch of time people cut when they leave early.

Where the Mats Come In

Some practitioners spend those holds lying on a therapy mat. The reasoning is practical rather than mystical: you are already going to be still and horizontal for a quarter of an hour, so it is a convenient window for a passive input.

The input is a pulsed electromagnetic field. Coils inside the mat generate low-intensity magnetic pulses that induce very small electrical currents in tissue, which in turn influence how ions move across cell membranes. Most PEMF mats built for home practice run at low frequencies, often in the single digits to low tens of hertz, at field strengths thousands of times weaker than an MRI scanner.

That is the mechanism. Whether it changes anything you would notice in savasana is a separate question, and the honest answer depends entirely on what you are asking it to do.

What the Research Supports, and What It Does Not

The strongest evidence is about bone. Regulators have overseen pulsed electromagnetic field bone growth stimulators since the late 1970s for fractures that fail to knit and as an adjunct to spinal fusion, and in 2026 the FDA reclassified those devices from class III to class II. They are prescription equipment worn six to eight hours a day for months, which is a different proposition from twenty minutes on a mat.

Joint pain is the next best supported. A 2022 meta-analysis pooling 11 trials and 614 patients, mostly knee osteoarthritis, found improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function against sham treatment. The caveats are substantial. Variation between the trials was extreme, most protocols ran only one to three weeks, and safety data was largely absent.

What is missing is the part that matters here. There is no good evidence that lying on one of these mats improves relaxation, heart rate variability or sleep, which is roughly what they get sold on in a yoga setting. Findings about bone healing and knee pain do not transfer to a claim about the nervous system.

The Contraindications Worth Asking About

Anyone with an implanted electronic device should clear it with their doctor first. That covers pacemakers, defibrillators, insulin pumps and cochlear implants, and cardiac device manufacturers generally advise against pulsed electromagnetic field exposure outright. Pregnancy is avoided because it has not been studied, not because harm has been demonstrated. Seizure disorders appear on most manufacturer lists.

If you teach, none of this is visible from the front of the room. Ask before you offer one.

Using One Without Letting It Do the Work

Match the session length to the hold rather than stretching the hold to fill a preset timer. Most home PEMF systems ship with fixed programs of twenty or thirty minutes, so it is worth finding out whether yours can be set to the length of your savasana instead of the reverse. Choose the low end of the frequency range for long restorative work, and practice the sequence without the mat first, so you know what your own baseline stillness feels like and can tell whether anything is genuinely different.

And be honest with yourself about which mechanism you are getting. If a mat is the thing that finally gets you to lie down for twenty minutes without reaching for your phone, that is a real benefit. It is just not an electromagnetic one.

What Savasana Earns on Its Own

A useful check on all of this comes from PRYSMS, a randomized trial that set six months of restorative yoga against six months of ordinary stretching in adults with metabolic syndrome. The stretching group came out ahead on waking cortisol and on perceived stress.

That is not an argument against restorative practice. It is an argument against one particular claim made for it, that a slow class resets your hormones. The acute physiology during a long hold is well documented and worth showing up for. The discipline of staying in one is worth more than most of what you can put underneath it.
